PRODUCER Has perhaps the biggest job of all! Responsible for all aspects of the production, both technical and artistic. The Producer is ultimately responsible for the show and fosters team spirit and sees that all members have a sense of how the show is progressing. This person has to be well organized, and a good at delegation.

DIRECTOR The person with that special vision! Studies the show and sets the artistic vision for the actors, set, costumes and technical aspects likes lights and sound to set the mood of the show. Holds auditions and casts the show. Runs the rehearsals, instructs actors, works with everyone including the Producer and Stage Manager to achieve the best possible results.

STAGE MANAGER Actually runs the show! Works closely with everyone on stage and back stage and is responsible for the technical aspects of the show. Once the curtain rises on opening night, the Stage Manager oversees the entire production ensuring the director’s vision is brought to life. In most shows the Stage Manager will also use an Assistant Stage Manager.

TECHNICAL DIRECTOR Making dreams a reality! Responsible for overseeing all of the technical aspects of the show such as materials, lighting, sound, costumes etc. The Technical Director balances the needs of the Producer, Director and Stage Manager and ensures all other departments stay on schedule. The Technical Director manages and directs the crew and technicians up to the final dress rehearsal.

SET DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION Rome wasn’t built in a day, but we can sure make it look like it was! Working with the Director and Producer the Set Designer draws up plans, co-ordinates building, painting and decorating. This group creates the fabulous sets that help to transport the audience to a high school in the 1950’s, the Emerald City or wherever the playwright’s imagination wishes to take them.

LIGHTS / SOUND The technical stuff that no show can do without! These technicians know that if you can’t see or hear an actor… the show does not go on. Lights and sound create the atmosphere and mood the director wants for the show, turning artistic vision into a dark and dreary cave fully of suspense or a sunny afternoon with birds singing. Imagine your favourite musical play without the music.

PROPS / SET DRESSING “Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio, a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy”! Would this famous scene be the same if Hamlet had been holding a shovel? Big or small – create them or find them. Every production needs an imaginative props person and set dressing to compliment the action!

MAKEUP How does a Director turn an actor into a convincing beast or a witch? While the costume can help, it is the makeup that completes the ensemble. Makeup can set the style of the show and transform an actor into anything the Director envisions.

COSTUMES – The stage is set, the actors are ready but what makes the audience “believe” in the characters? Their costumes. The costume designers use the Directors vision to complete the characters and present the final “look” of the show. Costume designers must have a strong visual sense and a good understanding of the effect of light and shadow on fabric to bring the characters to life.

PUBLICITY / PUBLIC RELATIONS – In many cases the Producer is responsible for publicity however the job of “getting the word out” is an important one. Promoting the show is essential to ensuring a packed house. Publicity includes everything from “pre-show” advertising, public relations, arranging for complimentary tickets to supporters, charities and sponsors and ensuring the audience members receive a positive Theatre Tillsonburg experience on show nights.
