Elwood's best friend is Harvey, a six-and-a-half foot invisible rabbit. His sister, Veta, decides to have Elwood committed to a sanitarium to spare their family from the embarrassments Elwood and Harvey cause socially. Problems arise, however, when Veta herself is mistakenly assumed to be on the verge of lunacy and committed! The mix-ups continue as everyone searches for Elwood who is searching the lost Harvey. Friends, doctors and even the audience seem to be strangely affected by Elwood's mild-manner delusion.
